Beautiful, Jessica; thank you for the backstory.

My family regularly travelled to Florida for vacation, via car. That's how I fell in love with the South. Many years later, my parents retired to North Carolina. That's how I got to love the Carolinas. Then, more than 20 years later, I moved to Charleston, SC. That's how I got to love the SC Lowcountry of which I write today.

Traveling to NE New Mexico, did you ever come across Angel Fire, or Taos, or Philmont Scout Ranch?

Thank you!

My grandparents lived in Florida, and I have two aunts who still live there. It is a nice place to visit, I find the traffic not to my liking. 😅 I recent flew into Raleigh for my trip to West Virginia and thought I had landed in Florida. 😉

As for New Mexico, I've never been farther south than Albuquerque. But it is beautiful country, especially the closer one gets to the Mojave.

I know Wolf Creek Pass and Blue Mesa. I have cousins in Clinton and Sayre, and more in Cloudcroft, and Silver Mountains. My father installed all tbe switchboards along Route 66 from Tucumcari amd Santa Fe to Las Vegas in the 1960s. I went to kindergarten at Tesuque Pueblo. Gorgeous country all of it.

What a neat history. Thanks for sharing!

That’s quite a coincidence. I graduated from high school in Oklahoma. Altus, not the panhandle. But I’ve been in that country—it’s gorgeous. Thanks for sharing those memories.

I think I recognize that volcanic cone! We drive by it every time we go to Colorado Spring. We always stop and my family walks it (minus me, since I’m sensitive to elevation).

That is Capulin, and if you take the highway out of Dumas and cross through Clayton, toward I-25, you’ll definitely see it from the road.

Sensitivity to elevation is terrible, I am so sorry.

We have always been in a rush to get through there, so we have yet to stop, but I told my kids and husband that next time we’re taking the time.
